About the Tennessee General Assembly and TSLA
The Tennessee General Assembly holds the discussions and decisions that shape state policy for millions of Tennesseans. The Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) records and preserves those sessions, keeping the state's legislative history accurate and available to the public.
The Challenge: Manual Transcription and Aging Cassette Tapes
For years, TSLA transcribed General Assembly sessions by hand. Staff spent hours listening to recordings and typing out what was said, which was slow and easy to get wrong. As the number of sessions grew, keeping up became overwhelming.
Older sessions sat on cassette tapes that were getting harder to play or preserve. TSLA needed to automate much of the work, cut the manual labor, and store both current and historical sessions securely and accessibly. It also wanted staff to be able to review and fix transcription errors so the final records were accurate, and it needed the recordings stored safely to protect the integrity of Tennessee's legislative history.
The Solution: AI Transcription, Human Review, and Digital Preservation
With VIDIZMO EnterpriseTube, TSLA automated much of the transcription. Staff upload a recording, and the platform's AI transcription generates a transcript, which handles large volumes far faster than typing by hand.
TSLA valued being able to edit those transcripts. The AI does most of the work, and staff review and correct anything before finalizing, which keeps the records accurate while cutting effort. TSLA also uploaded historical cassette recordings into the platform, so older sessions could be digitized, transcribed, and preserved. Once a recording was transcribed, the data was transferred securely to Preservica, a digital preservation system, which stores the records for the long term and makes them available to the public.
The Results: Accurate Records, Preserved for the Public
